In e4 openings it could be kinda of similar but to some extent white has more of a say in what type of position gets on the board. In most of these black is deciding what kind of game gets to be played and I guess I'm just a huge fan of that. Maybe the trompowsky is an option to change the direction of play as well but I'm not familiar with it at all. I will agree though that the london would be a good option to avoid the above options black has. If black goes for something like a french or caro kann white can always pick the exchange variations for both, which might not be the best but again when I play the french I feel as the best case scenario is advance variation (or at least it's one I enjoy more to play). e4 c5 is a different story I guess but even then white has many more options to drive the position to one they could be favorable with. The petrov isn't a bad option for black though to deviate. If it's e4 e5 many continuations just follow Nf3 Nc6 and then white can decide what they want to play. As black you could play the KID, Gruenfeld, Benoni, Benko Gambit, QGA, Nimzo Indian, as some examples. I guess it's kinda more of a mindset but black has a lot of options as far as ways they can play. The thing that gives me a headache in the king's gambit is the Falkbeer Countergambit. See if I can push some advantage that way. Have had some success with d4 but I feel like in a lot of d4 responses black can force a sharper game and I feel like I'm just on the back foot. e4 can be good sometimes but I just don't like playing positions (for example the Berlin) where it's hard to derive an advantage from (lot of open space with a lot of piece movement I guess? idk). I want to find something against e4 that's not too symmetrical and the ideas are a bit more clear (not a fan of Sicilians unfortunately).Īs white I'm still trying to find what I feel comfortable playing. Against e4 I've been playing e5 and playing Berlin against Ruy and just some boring lines against Italian's. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.Īs black against d4 I've recently picked up the KID as it can be fairly sharp and the strategic plans and ideas seem more clear to me than other openings.
